eclectic pair ( BC v AD )

Hi,

What is the reason behind using the English abbreviation (BC) to refer to a date before the birth of Christ and the Latin one (AD) to denote time after the birth of Christ?

It looks like AD is used FAR MORE OFTEN then CE (Common Era). Why do English speakers prefer AD to CE?
