Eating

During dinner, I take a piece of steak from my friend's plate.

He says," Hey that's mine!"

I reply w, "It's not like I wasn't gonna cut a piece off it anyway."

It's the opposite of

"I was going to cut a piece off it anyway."

But can they mean the same thing?
