One usually "has dinner" with someone else. One usually "eats dinner" alone.

She and I will be having dinner at nine o'clock. She and I will be eating dinner at nine o'clock.

Both sentences carry the same meaning; I don't detect any difference between them.

In the case of dinner, have means eat. You can have dinner

I can only add how I feel about those.

Having dinner is a much more refined activity than eating dinner.

Hi CJ,
CalifJimHaving dinner is a much more refined activity than eating dinner.
On second thought, there's something in what you say.

I only referred to the casual meaning of the word, but now that you mention it, it makes sense.

Thanks for amplifying this point.
