eat off the ground

I walked my dog and as usual, he tried to eat off the ground. When I saw him pick up that disgusting stuff, I grabbed his mouth to get him to release it.

Are there any mistakes?
Thanks.

... tried to eat something he had found on the ground. ...
"eating off the ground" doesn't specify that it's not his usual food.
For example,
My dog accidentally stuck his paw in his food bowl and tipped it over, so he had to eat off the ground.
