Eat my life

Hi,
Carlos sums up his options to his wife: "Either I do something fulfilling, where I help out other people and feel good about myself, or I take a job I hate where I make a lot of money but it eats my life and crushes my soul."

What does 'eats my life' mean and what does 'crushes my soul' mean?
Thanks.

Anonymous What does 'eats my life' mean and what does 'crushes my soul' mean? It's poetry, of course. My guess is that the time he spends at the job consumes/uses up his life, in the sense that those hours are gone.

  • If you think of your soul as a free joyous spirit, to crush it would be to destroy those qualities.

I'd say he's talking about pride. (He mentions "fulfillment" and "helping other people.")
