Would anyone know which of these is correct in ye old english garnmar

the need for equipment

the need of equipment

or can it vary, depending on what is required/needed.

thanks for your reply.

the sentence was ... 'thank you for your letter dated 22 September highlighting the need ....... equipment for your scout group'.

"For" sounds better to my native ear in this case, but I'm a bit too tired to explain why.
