Easy English 01 – Greetings

Hello and welcome to our first lesson. This is the first Lesson in the series Easy English and we will talk about Greetings. Greeting means to welcome and introduce yourself to someone in a friendly or polite way.

Here is how people greet each other in English, try to practice as many times as you can, and practice every where Emotion: smile

Simple Greetings:
Hello: Used to start a conversation.

Hi: Used to start a conversation but more casual.

Hello There: Used to start a conversation with someone we already know from before

Greetings at certain times:

Good morning: used when you greet someone before 12:00 pm.

Good afternoon: used when you greet someone anytime between 12:00 till 5:00 or 6:00 pm.

Good evening: used when you greet someone anytime between 6:00 pm and midnight.

Good night: used anytime as a farewell to refer that you are going to bed and have to leave, which could be any time after 7:00 pm.

General greetings I:

How are you? Or how have you been? Used as a polite way to ask about someone’s condition.

What have you been up to? Used to ask about the latest news or things someone has been doing recently.

What’s your name? To ask someone about his name.

My name is Mary Brawn. Used to simply introduce yourself by name only.

Are you Mary Brawn? Used to confirm the name or identity of the person usually using their full name.

Yes, I am Mary Brawn. Used to confirm your name.

No, I am not Mary Brawn I am Sarah Johns. Used to confirm that this is name is not yours and giving your name.

General greetings II:
I am fine or couldn’t be better: both used when someone ask you “how are you” to express your current condition which is good or fine.

Please have a seat. Used to ask someone to sit down politely.

Thank you.

Good bye it was nice meeting you. Used as farewell and to politely express your happiness about meeting this person.
