Easy does it.

I have no idea what the structure of this sentence is.
Is "it" the subject or the object?
If "it" is the object, why don't you use "do" instead of "does"?
Please explain.
Thank you.

It is the object, but the original sentence is a little difficult (for me, at least) to reconstruct because it is so idiomatic. The extension would be something like [The] easy [method] does it (= the easy way accomplishes the task). Similar uses of adjectives as proforms: Handsome is as handsome does .

  • The rich get richer.
  • Small is beautiful.
