earth or the earth? - article "the"

Did we use the article "the" correctly in these sentences?

1 - The most serious problem for the earth is the contamination of water.

2- I think the life in the earth is threatened because of the contamination of the water.

Top answer

The use of "the" itself is correct. But I think you had better capitalize E in the "earth" if you use it to mean our planet. 1 - The most serious problem for the Earth is (the) contamination of water.

I believe that the second sentence ought to be - I think (that) life on earth is threatened because of the contamination of the water.

It sounds more correct, and ALD (Advanced Learner's Dictionary) has a sentence that says the same.

Could you explain why your version sounds more correct and in what points my version is less correct?
