Earning

Hi, I would like to ask you about the following sentence.

When he worked as a lawyer, he earned a lot of money.

Does earned a lot of money mean the total sum or can we also use it to express a habitual action expressing the same as if we said He used to earn a lot of money?

Thank you for your answers

I would presume it meant his periodical salary, but it could also be his career earnings.
