Grammar

early/earlier

Hi,

I'm unsure how to use these in the following:

1) Kerouac's early/earlier work is far superior

2) The earl/early period of this life was full of joy

Any advice on this would be welcome...

Thanks

1. If you mean "earlier than one or more of his works that have previously been mentioned", then it should be "earlier". If you mean "early in his life" then "early" is the most unambiguous word, but "earlier" may be used in this sense too.
