Early vs. Earlier

Hello Everyone,

I usually set the alarm at the same time every day, but for some reason I need to set the alarm earlier than usual on a given day. Which one of the following sentences would be correct?

a) I need to set the alarm 15 minutes early.

b) I need to set the alarm 15 minutes earlier.

(a) seems to be the correct one. (b) sounds incomplete to me since I feel like I need to provide a comparison after using "earlier."

Thank you very much!

Best,
