I came across the following sentence, and I am confused about the use of "early":
1. I early saw the demoralization of so many of my out-of-work companions.
In this sentence, "early" seems to modify "saw". Is this possible?

It's rather eccentric. It's understandable, but it's most likely a substitute for the more normal 'soon'. I do not recommend imitating this quirky phrasing.

Early on I saw the demoralization ....
