Early morning

Hi,

1.I haven't had a cold drink since early morning.
2.I haven't had a cold drink since the early morning.

Which of the two sentences is correct? Why does 'the' come before 'morning' sometimes, while on other occasions it doesn't?

Thanks.

Both are fine and synonymous there. 'The' would be necessary if otherwise it was unclear which morning was meant. 'Early morning' without 'the' is a general time of day.
