Earlier

1. The Find dialog box enables you to select from the event criteria listed in "Windows 2000 event types" earlier in this chapter. (Original)

With 'earlier' do I use 'was' or 'is' ? 'earlier' is more of a time thing, so I should use 'was'?

2. The Find dialog box enables you to select from the event criteria that was listed in "Windows 2000 event types" earlier in this chapter. (Is 'that' referring to 'event criteria'?

3. The Find dialog box enables you to select from the event criteria that is listed in "Windows 2000 event types" earlier in this chapter.

4. The Find dialog box enables you to select from the event criteria that is listed in "Windows 2000 event types" beginning in this chapter. (With 'beginning' it is more appropriate for 'is' ?)

Thanks.

I think it is clear that 'that' refers to 'event criteria'. I think you should perhaps say 'at the beginning of this chapter', instead of 'beginning this chapter'. Also, you must use 'were' because 'criteria' is plural.

I think you should perhaps say 'at the beginning of this chapter', instead of 'beginning this chapter'. Also, you must use 'were' because 'criteria' is plural. Finally, I would use the past tense.

I would then say: '...that were listed in......at the beginning of [earlier in] this chapter'.

I hope this helps. I

I assume you are asking what tense would be used in a paraphrase of "criteria listed earlier in this chapter" if we were to spell out the tense with a "that are" or "that were". ("criteria" is plural, so the choice is not between "is" and "was".)
The answer is that either one is an acceptable paraphrase. You can say "criteria that are listed earlier" or "criteria that were listed ear
