E refused to have his army status changed in later years

In 1890-1891 he (future Emperor Nicholas) made a voyage around the world which took him to Egypt, India, and Japan. He held the customary commissions in the guards, rising, while still heir apparent, to the rank of colonel; in deference to the memory of Alexander III he refused to have his army status changed in later years.

So Alexander was a general, so why Nichholas refused to become a general too? Sounds strange to me.

Personal reasons, I suppose. Perhaps he did not want to exceed or be in a rank equal to Alexander's. "Deference" means humility and respect for another.
