"Dysfunctional" has become a very popular, shall I say ubiquitous, pop-psych word used to describe unhappy families (each of which, as we know, is unhappy in its own way) or relationships. It means, literally, that the family didn't function properly. Perhaps the mother was an alcoholic, the father passive-aggressive, one child the favorite and the others resentful, whatever.
