Vocabulary

Dynamic / spontaneous

Hi teachers,

1. The painting / still life set up is very dynamic. How does it mean?

2. Can you say "the painting / still life set up is very spontaneous"?

3. If a dancer misses her foothold at the end of the routine, but she makes it up by making it look less obviously amiss. Could in this situation "spontaneous" or "quick wit" be used to describe her?

4. Would you say the dancer is very dynamic?

5. Would you say the routine is very dynamic?

Thank you.

"Dynamic" has to do with power/motion/energy. When you're describing, art, including performance art, words are often used figuratively; because you're usually referring to your reaction or response to the art rather than to the work itself. Additionally, two observers often describe the same object/performance in completely different ways.

  • Some of this is universal, and transcends language.
  • "Spontaneity" usually refers to improvisation in real time, actual or imagined.

Hi Avangi,

Thank you for giving me examples and teaching me how to express the slip through many ways of saying it. Before I posted this question I found it very difficult to even try to write it in English.

I heard dynamic relating to a painting. I just don't think if I understand its usage.

1. If the painting is very dynamic, could it mean the still life

1. Your phrase "to show the energy" captures the secret and the problem. How can it be possible?

"The painting seems to jump out at you!" What can make people say things like this?
How do you put the "life" in still life? Perhaps not even the artist could tell you.
Brushstrokes - placement of objects - angles and perspective - certainly any or all of these!
