Thanks

Hi Dave

I was particularly curious about my two examples:

I fell ill during/over the weekend. - I understand it's better to say "over the weekend"?

I did it during/over the weekend. - You gave your own example, but are these two correct as well?

cheers

Were you ill all weekend or part of it?

Did you do it over part of the weekend or did it take the whole weekend?

Don't look at the examples look at the meaning!

Dave PhillipsWere you ill all weekend or part of it? During Saturday and Sunday.

Did you do it over part of the weekend or did it take the whole weekend? It took me the whole Saturday and Sunday.

When you "fall ill" you become ill. It's not suitable to "fall" ill for a two-day period.

(I don't use "fell ill" myself, but perhaps it's more common elsewhere. I'd say "I came down with a cold on Saturday and feel sick all weekend."

Even though, as GG says, "falling ill" is an event that cannot last for a period of time, "I fell ill over the weekend" nevertheless sounds fine to me. So it seems that "over the weekend" does not necessarily mean "all of the weekend".

Falling ill/feel ill is fine to my ear.

If you took the whole weekend then over the weekend!
