Can I say,

(a) During (the) recess/ At (the) recess time, pupils rushed to the canteen.

(b) Last Tuesday afternoon, during a recess, Peter bumped into a girl in the field.

(c) When it is recess, Peter runs to the canteen.

"During recess, pupils..."
You would be indicating that this 'rush' did not occur as soon as recess began...so...if they weren't in a rush to get to the canteen as soon as recess began, why are they in a rush now?

"At recess time, pupils..."
Sounds more logical - as soon as class was out,
