Do I say,

1 During / On the journey, they saw beautiful scenery.
2 The journey took an hour to reach the island.

Actually, apologies, I have to take that back. The second sentence doesn't look all that fine.

Suggested alternatives:
The journey to the island took an hour.
It took an hour to reach the island.

Both are better than the original sentence.
