during late Jurassic times/time

The first birds appeared during late Jurassic times.

This is a sentence in a TOELT test.
Could you explain why "times" is used here instead of "time"?
Here is a definition of "times" from Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary:

times (HISTORY)
plural noun
another word for time (HISTORICAL PERIOD)

Acorrding to this, it seems to be that both "times" and "time" are OK with the sentence above.
Do you agree?
Thanks.

Most often you will see this: The first birds appeared during the late Jurassic times . I presume that times refers to the idea that rock layers from the Jurassic period occur in many places around the globe. The fossils of these birds are found in these rock layers, so can be dated to the Jurassic.
