Grammar

during

It is so vague in distinguishing 'during' from 'for' that I am really curious of what the actual difference in meaning  is there to be.

e.g. a. I haven't really made friends for the past six months
       b. I haven't really made friends during the past six months.

The sentences above are brought from the another poster in this forum.
What is the difference in meaning between them?

No great difference in most cases, but 'for' lays emphasis on the time period as a whole, while 'during' leads us to consider events within the time period.

Thank you for the answer,
I think it is more of a matter of practising,I clearly understand what your answer indicates though. I should apply your idea into many other examples.
