dump

Hi teachers,
I see this sentence on the Internet and don't understand exactly the meaning of the verb"dump".So I wonder if you could help me understand it:
" a senior defense official said the U.S. has decided to dump a major NATO naval exercise in the North Pacific with Russia that was scheduled to begin Friday."

Thank you in advance
