Due to surgery

Hi. Let's say there is a certain person who had a metal pin lodged in his back after surgery. If he has to mention that to someone for some reason, can both of these be correct? I think they mean the same (I am not sure though). Thank you in advance for your help.

1.I had a pin lodged in my back due to surgery.
2. I had a pin lodged in my back due to the surgery I had some time ago.

'Due to surgery' makes it sound like it was left in your back accidentally. If it wasn't, I suggest eg I had surgery to put a pin in my back. Clive
