Due to, Because of, and As a result of

HI ALL

"By the time the bank guard closed the doors, a riot had erupted due to the long lines and shortage of telllers."

Say, what's wrong with the "due to" here? Why should "as a result of" be replaced in this place? Can I use "because of" instead?

I think I'm missing something regarding the use of 'due to', as I cannot see anything wrong with that sentence. 'Because of' sounds really ugly in that sentence so, if there is something wrong with using 'due to', I'd go for 'as a result of'. -Nyarlathotep

Yes, that's where I got stuck too. I don't see anything wrong with the use of "due to" but the answer says due to is wrong...

Any suggestions about the proper use of the three (due to, as result of and because of)? When to use which?

Yep, I've read the threads and they've proven to be very helpful.

So "because of" acts as an adverb and "due to" acts as an adjective... That means that my original sentence: "By the time the bank guard closed the doors, a riot had erupted due to the long lines and shortage of telllers." is definitely wrong. (according to one of the websites)
