due back on...

Dear teachers,

Please help me with the sentence below.

Remember, all books checked out today are due back on April 15th.

My question is, why is "back" used here? It really confuses me because I would think of a time to the past, not in the future. Or if it is only an idiomatic phrase?

Please advise.
