Du jour

Is "du jour," as in:

"long hair was the style du jou"
"the difference between keeping focused on what’s important in the long term and the urgent crisis du jour"
"black comedy is the genre du jour"

formal or informal speech?

Thank you.

I call it informal. It has a sarcastic, tongue-in-cheek quality that doesn't go with serious matters.

Perfectly acceptable really, quite stylish in fact, as are most things French; and heard all over the place.

Other examples include: "mot du jour", "art du jour", and of course the culinary "plat du jour" and "soupe du jour".

Formal or informal? Who cares? These imported French set pieces are gorgeous little things - use them as often as you like.
