Drugs don't work + IT just makes you worse

It was from a song and it says: 'Drugs don't work, it just makes you worse..' I think the pronoun 'they' would have to be used instead of 'it'.. Is that grammatically fine? Does the singer mean 'taking them' by 'it' ?

Is that a common use? I mean, in an academic context, can this be used?
