Drop the comma after 'i.e.' and 'e.g.' okay?

Is it okay to omit the comma – as I have done – after 'e.g.' and 'i.e.' below? I see this omission in BrE. We certainly wouldn't omit the comma after 'for example' and 'that is', so why would we omit them after the abbreviations?

Action verbs are a good choice for the first word, i.e. verbs that describe the performing of an action.

Consuming some of my favorite snacks (e.g. brownies and potato chips) has/have? caused me to gain twenty pounds.
