Does the idiom "drop the ball" can be used in everyday English, e.g. in the example below.

I certainly didn't mean to drop the ball. Could you please stop blaming on me?

I certainly didn't mean to drop the ball. Could you please stop blaming it on me?

When you say, "I dropped the ball," you are admitting that it was your fault. So you can't in the next statement contradict yourself and say "don't blame it on me."

You can say, "Don't keep rubbing it in."
