drop out

Hi,

He dropped out of college twice.
Does drop out of mean he wanted to leave college or he was forced to leave college by school? Is it ok just to say He dropped out twice? Thanks

He stopped attending. We don't know why. Perhaps there was no more money. Perhaps he became very ill. Perhaps his mother needed help tending the farm. The college did not force him, but other circumstances may have required it. Or mabye he just didn't like it any more.

If you say "he dropped out twice" the reader needs to know that you're talking about college.

Drop out means he quit on his own, either by simply failing to show up for classes or by formally withdrawing (usually the former, I think).

I would only say "drop out" if it was already clear you were talking about college.

Joe just doesn't have much luck with college, I guess. He's dropped out twice, once from Harvard and once from Polytech Commutaversity.
