Drop An Anchor

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/11/us/seven-found-20-hours-after-boat-capsizes-in-florida-keys.html

"The group dropped anchor not far from Long Key Bridge in the Middle Keys. A squall hit, with winds blowing up to 40 miles per hour and swells of up to 10 feet."

Shouldn't be preceded by "an", since "anchor" is countable? An anchor is that thing people dump in sea water to keep a ship from drifting away.
