Drop

Hello,

I was reading The Drop of Michael Connelly's and I couldn't get the meaning of these two sentences. Especially the "drop" and the "retroactive" made me confused. It would be really appreciated if you could help.

"I wanted you to know that your application for an extension to your DROP came through. They gave you four years retroactive."

Thanks in advance,
Dilan

Thanks again.

Thank you so much, it would really be useful for me.

Can I ask you one more thing? It is followed by this:

"....he'd take what they gave. It wouldn't keep him much past high school but it was better than nothing."

Then he says he was thinking about his daughter. Could it be related to her school? I mean with this four year, he gets to stay there until she graduates high

Yes, I suppose he means that he can still support her financially at least through high school.
