Driven straight

Union environment minister Jairam Ramesh has driven straight into a high-profile spat with the auto industry. Terming the use of diesel-guzzling SUVs as ``criminal'', Ramesh made a strong pitch for sending these off-roaders off the road. The auto industry has hit back, asking the minister to ``check his facts'' and adding that diesel technology of today was not only very clean but also extremely fuel efficient.

Please explain to me what driven straight means here.
