Drive down

The night they drove old Dixie down..

This line is from a well-known song. The meaning of "drive down" here is "defeat/conquer/subjugate" but I can't find that meaning in any of the dictionaries I've looked.

Do you think it's ok to use "drive down" with this meaning? Do you find it natural?

Yes, if the context is clear; the idiom is reasonably well known from the song (both The Band's original and Joan Baez's rendition).

Thanks MM.

Just one more thing, are you suggesting that the idiom had not been in use before the song was written?
