Vocabulary

drive back upon

drive back on:
drive someone back on something: to force someone to tap reserves of something.
e.g. The hard times drove them back on their life savings.
e.g. The challenges of being a corporate executive drove her back on
all her personal resources.

These is the definition I found on the internet. But the explanation makes me more confused. Could you tell me what "tap reserves" is?
