Drinking Olympics

Hi

The Edge says: That was one of those legendary nights. We ended up until dawn at Tosca's, a very funky little cafe bar that had stayed open for us. Bono stood on the bar and sang operatic arias. Oasis legged it before us. So Bono, not slow to pick up on an implied victory, took it as U2 seeing off the Oasis challenge in the drinking Olympics.

--- What does it mean that Oasis (band) "legged it before us"? and Bono took it as U2 seeing off the Oasis challenge in the drinking Olympics."

I don't understand these two sentences above. Can you explain them to me?

I suppose that "not slow to pick up on an implied victory" means that he didn't want to feel defeated by them (Oasis) and did the same thing and stood on the bar. Am I right?

My understanding of that whole passage is: The Edge from U2 says that it was one of their legendary nights. They went to Tosca's (little cafe bar) with the Oasis and had a good fun there. They were all drinking alcohol. Suddenly Bono stood on the bar and started singing operatic arias, however the guys from the Oasis did it before him and Bono didn't want to feel worse (defeated by them: "not slow to pick up on an implied victory") and stood on the bar as well. So, in other words Bono took the challenge and there must have been a lot of drinking (drinking Olympics).

Well, that's pretty much how I see it, but I'm not sure about it Emotion: smile

Thanks

Hi

I think it's much clearer now.

So, in other words that passage says something like: That was one of those legendary nights. We stayed at Tosca's until dawn. Bono stood on the bar and sang operatic arias, however the members of Oasis had enough and left the cafe before us and Bono thought that in the drinking competitions we had with Oasis it was U2 that won.

You missed out (possibly intentionally) the part about Tosca's being "a very funky little cafe bar that had stayed open for us" but otherwise, yes, pretty much.
