Drift

'I heard a peculiar sound drifting in from the hill.' Should I use 'drift' of 'drift in' in this sentence?

Top answer

Don't say 'in' here unless you are inside a building. 'Drifting from' sound rather literary. In casual English, more common is 'coming from'.
