Dream of/about

Hi,

What 's the difference in meaning between 'dream about' and 'dream of'? Which is usually used?

He has been dreaming about/of becoming a scientist someday since he was a child.

Thanks.

I use 'dream of' if I'm talking about an ambition or hope - I dream of winning the lottery. I use 'dream about' if I'm talking about what goes on in my sleep. Last night I had a dream about polar bears.

Hi KateJs,
Thank you very much for your comment. Can 'dream about' be used when talking about an ambition , hope or desire?

Hi,

Can we use 'to dream about' when talking about something we would like to happen like the example below?

"He has dreamed about becoming a scientist someday since he was a child."

Can I say "I dreamed of you last night" when talking about having a dream while sleeping?

Thanks.

Hi MM,

Could you tell me the difference between dream of/dream about in those situation if there is any?

Thanks a lot.

I see none, really. 'Of' in this kind of formation (think of, dream of, speak of, know of) usually refers to a slightly more general, less detailed or less thorough focus than does 'about'.
