Dream

For 'dream', can I use it like I talk about movies? For eg., in this moive the superhero saves her.

1. In this dream that I had last night, this person steals my car and comes back with a better car.

Or should it be like this:

2. In this dream that I had last night, this person stole my car and came back with a better car.

Thanks

Not being a psychiatrist, I can't imagine a more uninteresting thing than to have to listen to people telling me their dreams. Weird ones or not.
