Dread lighting up his spine

Hello,

It is about a man who usually has the same dream in which he is in a canyon and walking to a tunnel. In the last one, he wants to run and here is how it goes:

He took a step forward, dread lighting up his spine.

I couldn't figure out exactly what it means with "dread lighting up his spine". Could you please help?

Thanks.

Hi, It appears to mean that he is very frightened, but 'lighting up' does not seem to be a good choice of words. How about eg 'dancing up', 'creeping up' ? Clive

"dread lighting up his spine" means that dread is suffusing his spine like light suffuses a room.

I am so sorry I couldn't write earlier.

This is from a book, so I can't tell if your suggestions are okay or not but they seem to have a better meaning, for me at least.

Thanks again,

Dilan.
