Drawing on anthropological parallels...

Hi

Could you please help me explain these lines?

[The passage is about importance of fairly tales in education]

Mircea Eliade, for one, describes these stories as "models for human behavior [that,] by the very fact, give meaning and value to life." Drawing on anthropological parallels, he and others suggest that myths and fairy tales were derived from, or give symbolic expression to, initiation rites or other rites of passage -- such as metaphoric death of an old, inadequate self in order to be reborn on a higher plane of existence. He feels that this is why these tales meet a strongly felt need and are carriers of such deep meaning.

Thanks,

Tom

Sure, the text is not all that straightforward.

Which words elude you? I think you can ignore 'by the very fact', which seems to add nothing to the text.

Not particularly for me, but then I've read this sort of thing before.

Sometimes it's a matter of how familiar you already are with a given topic. It's always more difficult the first time you are exposed to a certain set of ideas.

The problem here is that the discussion is fairly abstract, not to

No; comparing anthropological findings with similar myths and fairy tales, as teechr has already stated above.
Mr. Tom initiation rites or other rites of passage...?
