Draw a conclusion about...

What do you call the process of evaluating what one has done in his life and what they weren't able to accomplish, as a whole?
Bettrer clarified: you know when the elderly look back at their life and feel the need to make an overall judgement? What would be an idiom for that? I thought of something like: "Draw a conclusion", but I don't think that quite cuts it.
Thank you.

Thank you Clive. The "draw a conclusion" thing was a transliteration from Italian, but on a second thought I think we don't have a spot-on way of expressing this concept either. "Summing up" sounds good.
