The shape of the melody is clear, but I'm a little fuzzy on the rhythm...have you ever run across an old system called "tonic sol-fa" for notating tunes alongside the lyrics to which they apply?...

There's an example of its use at http://www.mcsr.olemiss.edu/~mudws/notes/solfa.html, which unfortunately doesn't really explain how it's constructed...I keep stumbling over an acappella group from Minnesota with the name "Tonic Sol-Fa" when I try to Google up more information..

To get you started, measure lines are represented by vertical bars, the halfway point of a measure by a colon, quarter-notes by a period (aka "full stop"), and eighth-notes by commas...the continuation of a note across one of the major boundaries is denoted by a hyphen...pitches are represented by the initials of the Guido d'Arrezzo scale names: "do", "re", "mi" etc...accidentals append a modified vowel and the whole modified pitch name is written in: "re" is flatted as "ra", all others are flatted by changing their vowels to "e", and all degrees are sharped by changing the vowel to "i" ("mi" and "ti" are each just below a half-step in the major scale so there's no conflict there)..

One of the great things about this system, apart from the ease of representing both rhythm and pitch in a single line of text, is that the only absolute pitch is the key notation at the beginning...if you want to transpose up a minor third, just change "KEY G" to "KEY Bb" and you're done..r
