Downsize

Hi.

I have seen the word downsize is used for conditions that factories lay off many of their workers to have a smaller factory because of recession or other thing.

I wonder if we can use this word for graphs and plots, for instance this graph is downsized from 10cm2 to 5cm2.

Thank you very much for your help.

Now that the word popularly means 'make a company smaller', it seems funny in your sentence about a graph. Use 'reduce'.

Both verbs can be both transitive and intransitive.

Thanks for your time

1. reduce your speed and not decrease your speed

2. decrease the amount of water and not reduce the amount of water.

I cannot find a rule for it.

Would you please help me out?

Thanks

Hi,

I cannot justify why we say

Much of the difference between synonyms lies only in collocation. For instance, in the US, [url=http://www.google.co.jp/search?q=%22reduce+speed+sign%22&hl=en&lr=&prmd=ivns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&sourc
