'down to'

Hi!

Please re-confirm that these are wrong grammars.

"I climbed off the motorcycle and strode down to the impala"

"As spotlights shone down on them"

"The frosty grass crunched underfoot as they stroke down to the stadium"

I believe these are wrong as this is a question I had requested once in regard using of 'down to', and the answer I was given from you guys was that any verb +'down'+'to' is simply incorrect because unless 'down' is using as verb itself, 'down' followed by 'to' which presented as two prep. back-to-back is incorrect. (I've occasionally run into cases of likes and they've always caught my attention..)

The correct answers should be these?

"I climbed off the motorcycle and strode DOWN the impala"

"As spotlights shone ON them"

"The frosty grass crunched underfoot as they stroke DOWN the stadium"

Thanks in advance-Terr

Hi Terr,

They're all okay with a bit of modifiying. The "down to" in each case is fine. You can delete it in each case, though.

"I climbed off the motorcycle and strode down to the impala" -- Is "the Impala" a place? It means you walked toward it.

"As spotlights shone down on them" -- Not a complete sentence of course, but fine. The spotlights were above them, an

Hi,

Please re-confirm that these are wrong grammars.

"I climbed off the motorcycle and strode down to the impala" This is OK. By 'impala', I assume you mean a deer.

"As spotlights shone down on them" OK.

Hi, thanks for the many constructive inputs:

-'The frosty grass crunched underfoot as they stroke down to the stadium' - Yes, there was an typo in here, it should be 'strode'.

-My understanding of an impala is also a kind of deer, redish one for extra info.

Hi,

'down to' is with destination in mind, 'down' is taken place within(or along) the assigning object. That's what had make "I'm flushing it down to the toilet" incorrect, as 'flushing' is taking place inside a toilet, not flushing from the outside in.

Yes, this is the general idea.
