Down

She stared across the street, down a narrow gap between two houses.

Is this "down" a preposition? If so, what does this "down" really mean?

We often use up and down when we actually mean 'through' or 'along', even if there is no question of elevation . [ I live just a few blocks down/up the street from your grandparents. ]
