As your question is not answered yet I'll write my opinion on this subject...

As for me I suppose they always use the construction "playing the smth. " - playing the trumpet, playing the piano...

But it isn't so with "play": "My friend plays piano" is a common sentence

The use of articles, as you've probably already learned, is highly idiomatic. To borrow Clive's phrase, idiomatic just means "we say it that way because we say it that way."

If you're talking about a band, you'll hear both "and Mickey the Wonderkid on drums" as well as "and Mickey the Wonderkid on the drums" (or keyboard, or lead guitar, or bass).
