Doubt with regard to tense

I had a sentence in a manuscript which I've edited as it is in the first sentence below. But I also have another option (as presented in the second sentence below).
If the result is greater or less than 1, then this is an indication of tectonic influence occurring in the area.
If the result is greater or less than 1, then this is an indication that tectonic influence has occurred in the area.

My question is how the main verb "is" (present simple) in the main clause affects the verbs "occurring" (present continuous) and "has occurred" (present perfect) in the subordinate clauses.
For example, in the second sentence, why should it not be "If the result is greater or less than 1, then this is an indication that tectonic influence occurs in the area" (where verbs in both the main and the subordinate clause are in simple present).
Similarly, in the first sentence, why I have the tendency to use the present progressive form for the verb in the subordinate clause.

For most non-native speakers, it is mostly hard to explain the reasons in such cases as above. Awaiting replies with reasons.
